Madeira failed to place any monument among the 7 New Wonders of Portugal, after the event that took place last night in Sintra. The Jardim do Monte Palace was the only Madeiran entry to participate in the competition, having reached the final phase in the Tourism category.
The Jardim do Monte Palace was competing as one of three finalist entries in the Tourism category, but was ultimately defeated in the popular vote by the Jardim do Paço Episcopal, located in Castelo Branco.
The announcement of the winners was made at the end of an extensive television program broadcast by TVI, which covered the entire ceremony for the election of the country's new wonders.
