Hamilton laments loss of possible 1st pole in three years by 0.189s and demands Ferrari 'work harder'

Lewis Hamilton expressed frustration after missing the chance to claim his first pole position in three years by a margin of just 0.189 seconds during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix in Formula 1, on Saturday. The seven-time world champion, who races for Ferrari, led the decisive Q3 session after the first fast laps, but couldn't hold the position when just minutes remained before the end.

Hamilton ultimately couldn't beat his rivals equipped with Mercedes engines and urged Ferrari to "work harder" to improve performance. The British driver was seeking to achieve his 105th pole position in Formula 1 history, a record he already holds, but was prevented from accomplishing this feat in Barcelona.

The pole position ended up being claimed by Lando Norris of McLaren, a Mercedes customer team. The English world champion recorded an incredibly narrow advantage of just 0.011 seconds over Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader who races for the Mercedes factory team.

Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion for Red Bull, finished qualifying in third place, 0.049 seconds from pole. The British team uses Ford engines. In the same session, Brazilian Bortoleto completed qualifying in 12th place on the starting grid.

Why this matters

Brazilian fans have particular interest in this result because Brazilian Bortoleto starts 12th, and Ferrari's performance — still without a win in 2025 — fuels doubts about the Italian team's ability to compete for the title. Hamilton's performance, as he sought his first pole since 2023, also directly affects the expectations of the team's supporters.
