The Rio de Janeiro city government began, this Saturday, the flood control works in the Acari River Basin, in the North Zone of the city. The first phase of the interventions includes reinforcement of the banks and improvements in water drainage in Jardim América, as well as the creation of circulation and leisure spaces.
The complete project is being executed by the Rio-Águas Foundation and is budgeted at R$ 430 million, a value that includes the works and the river maintenance services. According to the municipality, approximately 80,000 people will be directly benefited by the interventions.
In this first stage, 740 meters of containment walls will be built in the Nova União stretch, with stone and concrete structures to reinforce the river banks. Interventions are also planned at the confluence of the Acari and Pavuna rivers to facilitate water drainage.
The forecast is that this initial stage of the works will be completed in the second half of 2027.
