The State Secretariat of Prison Police of Rio de Janeiro investigates the use of a drone to smuggle illicit equipment to the Oscar Stevenson Penal Institute, a female prison in Benfica, in the North Zone. The device flew over the unit between 3am and 4am on Saturday morning, and based on the flight trajectory, agents found in a cell 20 phones, more than six kilos of drugs and a large quantity of cigarettes. The prison police officers also noticed atypical movement in the Favela do Arará, around the unit, during the early morning. This is not the first time drones have been used to smuggle materials into prison units.
