The feature film "A Noiva Difícil", directed by Rubaiyat Hossain and co-produced by Portugal through Midas Filmes with support from ICA, was honored at the Venice Film Festival with the Bisato d'Ouro award for Best Direction, awarded by independent critics. The jury highlighted that women and the social structures that shape their lives have always been central to Hossain's cinema, emphasizing that in this work the filmmaker takes this concern to an "even more surreal" level, where "the body becomes the center of the film and the source of resistance."
The production is an international co-production bringing together efforts from Bangladesh, Portugal, France, Germany and Norway. The project features cinematography by Portuguese filmmaker Leonor Teles, already awarded at Cannes, whose work was repeatedly praised by international critics throughout the various sold-out screenings in the competitive Orizzonti section.
With a narrative focused on the wedding preparations of a young woman, the film is described as a work "of great formal exuberance and jubilant tone." After its passage through Venice, the film will continue to the festivals of Toronto, London, Tokyo and Vienna, with a scheduled release in Portuguese theaters for spring 2027. Midas Filmes also revealed that the director will return to shoot her next feature film in Portugal.
The 83rd edition of the Venice Biennale was also marked by other notable national presences, including the screening of the restored version of "Udju Azul di Yonta" by Guinean director Flora Gomes, by the Portuguese Cinemateca, and the awarding of the Robert Bresson prize to Portuguese director Pedro Costa.
