A civic demonstration took place that set off from Largo da Feira in Espinho heading to Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's residence, in Espinho, on September 12, 2026. The march aimed to protest against the high cost of fuels and demand a reduction in the VAT rate to 6%.
The demonstration sought to give voice to the concerns of various social groups, including general citizens, workers, farmers, truck drivers, transport operators, drivers, motorcyclists, and families. Participants also expressed concern over rising living costs and the tax burden in Portugal.
The protest focused essentially on the fuel issue, demanding more affordable prices for consumers. The organizers specifically called for the application of a reduced VAT rate of 6% as a way to ease the impact of energy costs on household and business budgets.
