A significant increase in rural fire danger is forecast for mainland Portugal over the coming days, with very high or extreme levels expected in many regions. Temperatures exceeding 35°C and the expected meteorological conditions are conducive to the occurrence and spread of rural fires, which could contribute to an increase in the number of ignitions.
The Republican National Guard (GNR) has warned the population of the need to exercise extra caution and adopt responsible behaviour, especially in forested and agricultural areas. Since the start of the year until September 6, the GNR recorded 7,034 rural fires and detained 172 suspects. Approximately 52.5% of fires originate from negligent human behaviour, with 66% of arrests being related to controlled burning and outdoor fires, and 16% related to the use of agricultural machinery.
On days of very high or extreme danger, the GNR recalls that it is prohibited to smoke, make fires or bonfires, carry out extensive controlled burning, burn piles, use fire for cooking outside authorised areas, release sky lanterns or fireworks, and use brush cutters, chainsaws, or other equipment that generate sparks without safety devices.
The GNR calls on the population to avoid any behaviour likely to cause ignition, emphasising that the prevention of rural fires depends on individual responsibility. In case of fire, one should immediately call 112 or 117.
