Russian President Vladimir Putin defended at the BRICS summit the expansion of the United Nations Security Council, considering that including representatives from Asia, Africa and Latin America would help improve the organization's performance. Putin stated that Russia attaches exceptional importance to preserving and strengthening the central role of the United Nations in world affairs.
The Russian leader, who on the previous day had met with several leaders who participated in the summit in New Delhi, declared that the formation of a multipolar world faces several challenges. According to Putin, this is due to the resistance of countries that are accustomed to thinking in colonial terms, refusing to accept the changing reality and seeking to contain their competitors by all possible means.
Putin criticized what he considered to be practices such as tariff wars, illegitimate sanctions, attempts at economic dictation, blackmail, interference in internal affairs and the use of brute force. The Russian President also warned that old tensions are being revived, provoking new conflicts, which is causing the international relations system to fail and the effectiveness of various multilateral institutions to decrease.
The BRICS group is composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia.
