President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the possibility of ending the trade war with Canada and stated that an agreement between the two countries could be reached "soon." He, however, gave no details about a possible resumption of formal negotiations between the two economies.
Trump made the statements this Saturday during a meeting with the Irish Prime Minister, Micheál Martin, in Dublin. The American president was asked whether he intended to withdraw the United States from the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), but avoided answering directly and stated that Canada wants to reach an understanding with Washington.
According to Trump, his goal is to obtain better conditions for American farmers. He stated that Canada needs to treat American farmers better and cannot charge them tariffs. The American president stated that Canadians are charging 400% tariffs on American farmers, in addition to other trade measures that he considers unfair.
Trump said that when these measures are eliminated, Canada will be willing to end the trade war. The conversation on the subject took place in the context of Trump's state visit to Ireland, where he met with Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
