About 150 people gathered today in the center of Schwerin, capital of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in Germany, to protest against the far-right. Participants carried signs with the message "Nie wieder ist jetzt" ("Never again is now"), a slogan calling for vigilance against the resurgence of extremist movements.
The protest aimed to demand constitutional verification of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right political force that has been gaining ground in the country. The organizers and participants want German institutions to assess whether the party complies with the principles of the country's Basic Law.
The protest took place eight days before the regional elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which gives particular urgency to the organizers' request. The AfD has been posting increasingly strong results in polls at both the federal and state levels, which has generated concern among democratic parties and civil society organizations.
