Socialist Carneiro accused Chega of "deceiving" the Portuguese on fuel matters. The accusation arises in the context of a political dispute over the reduction of VAT on fuels.
Carneiro recalled that Chega voted down two previous proposals from the Socialist Party that proposed reducing VAT from 23% to 13% on fuels. These two proposals were rejected by the right-wing party before a third proposal came to be supported by Chega last week.
This change in Chega's position, which went from rejection to support, led Carneiro to question the party's consistency and accuse it of deceiving the Portuguese with promises it initially did not fulfill.
