The PS (Socialist Party) has already presented the VAT reduction proposal three times, with António Costa having made this announcement at a European Council meeting. The party refuses, however, to associate itself with Chega's initiative, which proposes reducing VAT on fuels and food.
The Socialist João Soeiro, heard by Expresso, argues that Chega "wants to deceive the Portuguese." The PS's position is based on the idea that André Ventura's party "has no solution" to finance the measure, intending only to "engage in demagogy."
André Ventura's party proposes reducing ISP (Excise Tax on Petroleum Products) and applying zero VAT on an essential food basket. This measure has been publicly defended by Chega in recent months.
According to Expresso, despite the PS's public discourse in recent months having been to call for ISP reduction and zero VAT on an essential basket, the Socialists will not join the far-right party in voting on this proposal.
