The author of this article, due to his move to a retirement home, dedicates this space in the «Times» to the algarvian capital and to all those who have served it. He fondly remembers two deceased friends: Drs. Eurico Gomes and Libertário dos Santos Viegas.
Dr. Eurico Gomes was one of the most distinguished physicians who practiced in the Algarve. A specialist in diabetes, he held high-level positions at CHUA (Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve), based in Faro, and was the founder and «driving soul» of AEDMADA (Association for the Study of Diabetes in the Algarve), promoting a regional action around this disease of high global significance.
A native of Barcelos, he was an avowed Minhoto (person from Minho) and author of several books reflecting his connection to the Northern Region. The author compares his writing style to that of Júlio Dinis, referring to the simplicity and certain rural descriptiveness present in his works.
Dr. Eurico Gomes received several high distinctions and was considered one of the greatest Portuguese diabetologists. The article also mentions that he acted against the wishes of entities from which total collaboration in his work on diabetes would have been expected.
