Helena Afonso died at 72, daughter of singer and songwriter José Afonso, known as Zeca Afonso, a central figure in Portuguese protest music and the struggles for freedom in Portugal. Helena Afonso shared with her father the struggles of April, aligning herself with the cultural and political movement that marked Portugal's democratic transition after the April 25, 1974 Revolution.
The wake takes place this Saturday, starting at 6:00 PM, at the Montepio Rainha D. Leonor funeral home, located in the centre of Caldas da Rainha. Information about the funeral ceremony has not yet been released.
Helena Afonso leaves a legacy of closeness to her father and to the causes they both defended throughout their lives, keeping alive the memory of Zeca Afonso and his contribution to music and freedom in Portugal.
