Guimarães Reinforces Investment in Education with New Educational Charter and School Requalification Program

Início12 September 2026 at 10:55

The Municipality of Guimarães will proceed with a new Educational Charter and a requalification program for primary schools, scheduled to begin in 2027 with funding included in the Municipal Budget. The announcements were made by the Mayor of Guimarães, Ricardo Araújo, this Thursday, at Teatro Jordão, during the presentation of the Municipal Plan for Arts, Culture and Heritage in Guimarães Schools.

The session was also marked by the signing of a collaboration protocol with the National Arts Plan, reinforcing the municipal commitment to education and school culture. Ricardo Araújo highlighted that intervention in school facilities is one of the municipal priorities for the coming year.

In parallel, a new maintenance and repair model for school facilities has already entered a pilot phase, involving four school groupings. Primary schools have already been identified and prioritized according to existing needs and degree of urgency, allowing the Municipality to prepare a response that is both programmed and financially sustainable.

Why this matters

Parents and families in Guimarães directly benefit from these measures, which aim to improve the physical conditions of primary schools and the quality of school maintenance. The requalification program, with schools already identified and prioritized, represents a concrete financial commitment from the municipality for the coming years. This initiative is part of a broader strategy that includes the Municipal Arts Plan and collaboration with the National Arts Plan.

Indian prime minister calls on BRICS for a roadmap to reform global governance

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called at the BRICS summit in New Delhi for a roadmap to reform global governance, arguing that the current structure functions as a pyramid where power and decision-making are concentrated at the top, while affected countries lack the capacity to influence. Modi outlined three axes for reform — representation, responsiveness, and norm-making — and stressed that the reform of the United Nations Security Council "can no longer be postponed," demanding negotiations with set deadlines. India, which holds the rotating presidency of the bloc, sought to position BRICS as a platform for reforming the international system and not as a confrontation alliance, arguing that the Global South should cease being merely a recipient of norms to participate in their development.
