The XIX Edition of the Beach Gymnastic-Recreational Event for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities took place on September 11, 2026 on the sand of Santo Amaro, in Oeiras, bringing together 300 participants from 20 institutions. The event, which included dexterity games and activities in the aquatic environment, was organized by Casa de Saúde da Idanha, of the Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in partnership with Instituto S. João de Deus from Casa de Saúde do Telhal, with the support of the Municipality of Oeiras.
Sofia Rosado, psychomotor therapist at Casa de Saúde da Idanha and organizer of the event, highlighted the great social impact of the initiative, where fellowship and mutual support among participants stand out. For the organizer, the Gymnastic-Recreational event enables the deconstruction of prejudices and allows observers to perceive what these people are and what they're worth.
Helder, a user of Cerciama in Amadora, which supports children, young people and adults with intellectual disability or multiple disabilities, stated that the event allows meeting users from other institutions, emphasizing that this is how a family is formed. Ana Rita Santos, from Casa de Saúde do Telhal, added that these initiatives outside the facilities enhance the deepening of interpersonal relationships, allowing users to socialize with anyone.
The participating institutions integrate a network of inter-centers in the Lisbon region that organizes activities throughout the year. Raquel Coelho, from Cerciama, recalled that each institution is not an island and works in partnership with the others. Over 19 editions, the event has aimed to promote the social participation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through sport and recreational-leisure activities.
