The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced that it will fund egg freezing for Spanish footballers and referees. This measure aims to support female athletes who wish to preserve their fertility while pursuing their sports careers.
Eligible for this funding are players who have been called up at least twice for national football and futsal teams. The benefit also extends to all main referees and assistant referees who officiate in the Spanish first division.
The initiative comes in a context where more and more women in sport are postponing motherhood to dedicate themselves to their professional careers. Egg freezing allows female gametes to be preserved for future use, giving athletes greater flexibility in family planning.
This is not the first measure that RFEF has implemented in support of women in Spanish football. The federation has been developing policies to support parenthood and work-life balance between family life and female sports careers.
