Japan raised the alert level in the Tokachi volcano zone due to increased seismic activity in the region. This elevation comes after the volcano registered its first eruption in over 20 years in July.
Tokachi is an active volcano located in the center of Hokkaido island, Japan's second largest island. The Japanese meteorological agency decided to raise the alert level in response to the intensification of earthquakes felt in the area surrounding the volcano.
This is not the first time Tokachi has caused concern for Japanese authorities. The volcano remained dormant for more than two decades before awakening in July, when it erupted for the first time since the beginning of the 21st century.
