Cold front keeps heavy rain and drops temperatures in the South and Southeast this weekend; see forecast

A cold front associated with an extratropical cyclone keeps unstable weather in areas of the South and Southeast of Brazil this weekend. Saturday (12) and Sunday (13) will have conditions for heavy rain, isolated storms and intense winds, mainly affecting the states of Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul.

The cyclone is expected to move rapidly toward the Atlantic Ocean, but contributes to the formation of a moisture channel between the North, Central-West, Southeast and South regions. Simultaneously, a cold air mass advances through the South and the southern portion of the Central-West and Southeast, causing temperatures to drop in these areas.

The interior of the country remains under the influence of dry air, with intense heat and low humidity levels. In the Amazon, the heat combined with high humidity favors the formation of new areas of instability. On Saturday, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) maintains an orange danger warning for storms in the west, central, south and east of São Paulo and in the south and southeast of Mato Grosso do Sul, in addition to yellow alerts for other areas.

South and Southeast regions suffer effects of cyclone, with landslides, hail, floods and tornado

An extratropical cyclone that hit the South Region of Brazil caused severe storms in the Southern states and parts of the Southeast, causing flooding, landslides, fallen trees, hail and damage to properties and roads. In Paraná, a tornado was confirmed in Goioerê, in the northwest of the state — the 13th recorded in the state this year — formed from a supercell storm during the passage of a cold front, with no reports of injuries. The passage of the cyclone reinforced atmospheric instability and raised the risk of storms, with forecast of continued heavy rain and intense winds for this Saturday in the affected regions.

Almeirim under yellow warning due to heat until Monday

The district of Santarém, including Almeirim, is under yellow warning due to heat, issued by the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, in effect between 10:00 AM on Saturday and 5:00 PM on Monday. The forecast high temperatures increase the risk of rural fire, so Civil Protection authorities remind that several legal restrictions remain in force, namely the prohibition of extensive controlled burns, burning of debris piles, and the use of fire for cooking food in rural areas, except in expressly authorized locations.
