Mendonça denies full access to Vorcaro's cell phone, says measure could compromise investigation and states he never handled the material

Minister André Mendonça, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), denied on Thursday having full access to the contents of Daniel Vorcaro's cell phone. In a dispatch responding to colleague Cristiano Zanin, Mendonça stated that disclosing the full material could compromise new Federal Police operations and the efficiency of ongoing investigations.

The rapporteur claimed he did not handle the material and that he has the same information made available to the other court ministers for the trial scheduled for next Tuesday. The decision responds to an official letter from Zanin amid internal demands that STF members have access to the entirety of messages and data seized in the investigations.

According to Mendonça, the cell phone whose access was requested is not in his office. The Federal Police only delivered a backup copy of the extracted data, which remains in a sealed envelope and was never handled by the rapporteur. The original material, according to the minister, remains under the custody of the PF itself.

Shorts and ironies

The book "Struggles against the dictatorship from Democratic Portugal – transatlantic connections", by Edgar Silva and Élvio Passos, was presented in Funchal. The book is dedicated to the role of resistance journalism against Salazarist censorship. The article highlights the irony of celebrating this memory in a context where free and independent press in Madeira finds itself progressively limited by dependence on regional subsidies, the pressure of concrete, and domesticated editorial lines. The piece warns that although journalism no longer formally faces dictatorships, it encounters new, subtle mechanisms of conditioning, where scrutiny gives way to propaganda and investigative journalism is replaced by government press releases.

Lula raises the tone and reacts to the crisis: 'In my term, Vorcaro became a prisoner'

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva raised the tone during a rally in Porto Alegre by stating that in his term, banker Daniel Vorcaro, arrested amid the Banco Master crisis, was turned into a prisoner, while under the Bolsonaro government he would have become a "bank." Lula also criticized the opposition, accusing it of trying to attribute to him the scandal of INSS pension embezzlement, which according to him was created under the Bolsonaro government and dismantled under his management. The president stated he is in favor of opening a CPI to investigate the case, despite resistance within his own government.
