The book "Struggles against the dictatorship from Democratic Portugal – transatlantic connections", by Edgar Silva and Élvio Passos, was presented in Funchal. The book is dedicated to the role of resistance journalism against Salazarist censorship. The article highlights the irony of celebrating this memory in a context where free and independent press in Madeira finds itself progressively limited by dependence on regional subsidies, the pressure of concrete, and domesticated editorial lines. The piece warns that although journalism no longer formally faces dictatorships, it encounters new, subtle mechanisms of conditioning, where scrutiny gives way to propaganda and investigative journalism is replaced by government press releases.
