Dies at 95, José Badim, pioneer of reconstructive surgery in Brazil and founder of the hospital that bears his name

José Badim died at 95 on Thursday night. He was considered one of the pioneers of plastic and reconstructive surgery in Brazil and founder of Hospital José Badim, located in Maracanã, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

Throughout more than seven decades of career, Badim participated in decisive moments for the evolution of surgery in the country. He performed the first hand replantation in Brazil in 1968, in addition to the first scalp replantation.

Badim served as head of plastic surgery at Hospital Municipal Souza Aguiar, where he participated in the creation of a microsurgery reconstructive service at the unit. During the 1970s, he also provided medical assistance, closely following the evolution of Medicine in Brazil.
