Prime Minister Luís Montenegro was present this Friday at the official launch ceremony of the school year, but refused to reveal how many students started classes without a teacher. When questioned on the matter, he simply responded: "I won't go into that."
The ceremony took place at the Barbosa du Bocage School Center in Setúbal. Upon the prime minister's arrival, Montenegro was greeted by a protest from Fenprof, the teachers' union that has been warning about the lack of teachers in schools.
Fenprof has criticized the ministry for the absence of teachers in several schools across the country, a situation affecting thousands of students since the start of the school year. The union has been demanding immediate solutions from the government to resolve the education crisis.
Montenegro's executive thus faces a new wave of criticism at the start of the school year, with teachers organized in protest at the door of a school that was hosting the government's official ceremony.
