The 66-year-old Buddhist monk Phra Wachirayan Wi was arrested on Thursday (10/9) in Thailand on charges of embezzling 92 million bahts, equivalent to approximately R$ 14 million, in donations made to the Wat Phutthaisawan temple, located in Ayutthaya. The religious figure was also caught having sex with a lay follower, Punyavee Rungrueang, 47 years old, inside the temple itself.
The recording of the intimate act was captured by the temple's security cameras. The images show the couple initially kissing on a chair and then having sex on the dining table. The video was discovered by police during investigations into the money embezzlement and money laundering practiced by the monk.
In Thailand, Buddhist monks take vows of celibacy and also renounce material possessions, which makes the scandal even more serious. Phra Wachirayan Wi was arrested along with Punyavee, who also faces charges of complicity and money laundering, as millions of bahts circulated annually through her bank accounts.
