Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), voted to reject the appeal filed by the defense of former congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) against his conviction in the criminal action for coercion in the course of proceedings. Eduardo was convicted for articulating sanctions against Brazil from the United States. The indictment by the Attorney General's Office (PGR) alleged that he worked to have the American government adopt measures such as the tariff hikes, the Magnitsky Act against Moraes, and the revocation of visas for STF ministers.
In his vote, Moraes argued that there is no omission, contradiction, or obscurity in the decision that convicted Eduardo. The rapporteur rejected the defense's argument that Jair Bolsonaro's son should have his sentence reduced based on the so-called spontaneous confession.
According to Moraes, Eduardo made public statements that helped prove the conduct for which he was convicted, but did not admit the consummation of the crime. The minister stated that the statements made by Eduardo do not fall under parliamentary immunity.
