"The increase in urban land more than doubled": Guimarães presents new PDM proposal

The Mayor of Guimarães, Ricardo Araújo, presented a new proposal for the revision of the Municipal Master Plan (PDM) that more than doubled the increase in urban soil. The document is based on three fundamental axes: housing, economic development and mobility. The revision also alters construction parameters in several areas of the municipality, namely in rural settlements, where a lot of one thousand square meters can now have a building capacity of 600 square meters, triple the 200 square meters currently permitted.

Regarding economic development, the plan reserves more area for economic activities, increasing from 896.25 to 1,057.69 hectares, a reinforcement of approximately 161 hectares. The proposal includes 31 Planning and Management Operational Units, of which 13 are focused on the economy and 15 on housing.

In the mobility axis, approximately five new road connections are planned, including a road between the top of Avenida D. João IV and the Costa area, a tunnel connecting the same avenue to Urgezes, a road between Nespereira and Silvares, the Mesão Frio–Fermentões connection, and a road to the north of Taipas associated with a future access node to the A11. The municipality states that these works are in the planning phase and depend on priorities and available budget.

The City Council also highlighted that the requests presented by the population during the public discussion process now received a favorable or partially favorable response in approximately 46% of cases, a significant increase compared to the previous proposal, which was around 10%. The proposal now goes to the City Council meeting for consideration and subsequently to the Municipal Assembly.
