The TRE-RJ rejected unanimously, on Friday, the candidacy registration of Anthony Garotinho, from Republicanos, for governor of Rio de Janeiro. The decision can still be contested at the Superior Electoral Court.
The judges upheld the objections against Garotinho understanding that the former governor is not in full exercise of political rights due to a definitive conviction for administrative impropriety. The sentence determines the suspension of political rights for eight years and involves damage to the public coffers calculated at approximately R$ 234 million.
The defense argued that the suspension period should be counted from 2018 and that, under this interpretation, the eight years would have already ended in August of this year. Rapporteur Bruno Bodart rejected the thesis presented by the lawyers.
Bodart understood that, even considering the counting advocated by the defense, Garotinho's party affiliation, made in March 2024, would have occurred during the period of suspension of political rights, making his candidacy for governor of the state impossible.
