A fire broke out late morning in a scrubland and pasture area in the municipality of Mértola, district of Beja, with the alert being given at 11:50 through GNR surveillance towers. The fire originated at Cerro do Entrudo, almost at the border of the municipality of Mértola with the Algarve, and was reported as controlled at 17:40, according to a Civil Protection source.
The sub-regional deputy commander of Emergency and Civil Protection of Baixo Alentejo, José Horta, indicated that one of the problems at the operations theatre was difficult access, with moderate and steep slopes, which complicated the passage of firefighters.
One firefighter and another person were assisted at the scene, but the fire did not affect houses. The firefighting operations counted with 165 operatives, including firefighters from several corporations of Baixo Alentejo and the Algarve, supported by 53 vehicles and eight aerial means, including helicopters and planes.
