Maria Luís Albuquerque, European Commissioner for Financial Services: "Financial literacy is a basic competence, ideally introduced from an early age in the education system, as many countries do"

RTP Notícias11 September 2026 at 18:40

Maria Luís Albuquerque, former Minister of Finance of Portugal and current European Commissioner for Financial Services, gave an interview to RTP Europa where she spoke about the importance of financial literacy for young people. In her intervention, the commissioner defended that financial literacy should be considered a basic competence that should be introduced from a very early age in the education system.

Albuquerque mentioned that many countries already implement financial education programs in schools from the first years of schooling, and defended that this practice should be generalized to all European Union member states. The commissioner highlighted that teaching young people to manage money and to understand basic financial concepts is essential for the economic future of the continent.

Regarding the financing of these initiatives, the former Portuguese minister insisted that the defense and promotion of financial literacy is one of the main priorities of the next European Union Budget. This position reflects the intention to allocate significant resources for financial education programs in the coming years.
