Artificial heart could have saved boy who died with burned organ

An extracorporeal artificial heart could have saved a two-and-a-half-year-old Italian boy who died in February, after undergoing a heart transplant in December of the previous year.

The boy received a transplanted heart that was described as "burned," suggesting the organ had severe damage.

The artificial device, known as an extracorporeal artificial heart, could have been an alternative to conventional transplantation, potentially avoiding complications arising from the damaged organ.
