Morocco has begun the electoral campaign for the September 23 legislative elections. These elections have sparked an intense political battle between the country's main parties. The elections are taking place in a context marked by last summer's Ceuta crisis, when thousands of migrants attempted to enter the Spanish autonomous city, which strained relations between Spain and Morocco. The claims over Ceuta and Melilla have appeared in various campaign events of different parties.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), founded by Fouad Ali El Himma, has focused part of its discourse on the autonomous cities, calling for a text to be included in the Constitution guaranteeing their belonging to Morocco. For its part, the Justice and Development Party (PJD), the Islamist formation leading the government coalition, has been criticized for its supposed silence on the question of Ceuta and Melilla during the crisis.
These elections are especially significant because the executive that emerges from the polls will be in charge of managing the path to the 2030 Men's World Cup, which Morocco will organize together with Spain and Portugal. For the Moroccan government, the World Cup is not just a sporting competition, but it involves major ongoing public and private investments and the renovation of numerous infrastructures throughout the country.
