Jornal da CBN presented this Friday (11) another edition of "50 Debates for Brazil," a series that discusses relevant topics for the country's future and for the October elections. The proposal is to bring together specialists with different positions and offer arguments so listeners can form their own opinion.
In this edition, the program debated the end of temporary prison releases, known as "saidinhas." The discussion contrasted two positions: on one side, the risk of escapes and new crimes during the benefit; on the other, the role of family visits and external activities in the rehabilitation process of inmates.
Law No. 14,843 of 2024 revoked temporary releases intended for family visits and participation in activities that contribute to reintegration into society. The current Penal Execution Law maintains the benefit only for semi-open regime prisoners attending vocational courses or high school and higher education.
The legislation also prohibits temporary release and unsupervised external work for certain categories of prisoners. The debate sought to present arguments from different specialists so the population could better understand the impacts of this change in Brazilian criminal policy.
