São Miguel, Azores: Furnas Volcano raises to V1 alert level due to increased seismic activity

The Furnas volcano on the island of São Miguel in the Azores moved to volcanic alert level V1 after the Azores Seismic Surveillance and Information Centre (CIVISA) detected a significant increase in seismic activity in the region.

Since 11:47 on Tuesday, September 8, several seismic events have been recorded in the Furnas volcanic system, located in the municipality of Povoação, in the eastern part of the island of São Miguel. All recorded events showed low magnitude.

The most energetic event occurred at 16:41 on the same day, with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of this earthquake was located approximately four kilometers west-southwest of Furnas, having been felt with a maximum intensity of V on the Modified Mercalli scale.

Study by Sintra researcher reveals social inequalities in eating habits

A study by Sintra sociologist Vasco Ramos, a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon, has won the João Ferreira de Almeida 2025 Prize. The research analyses the relationship between social class, consumption and eating habits in Portugal, concluding that there are significant differences in alcohol consumption patterns depending on social position, with "cultural fractions" spending more on beverages for home consumption and top executives opting more for out-of-home consumption. Wine is the most consumed beverage regardless of class, while spirits are associated with more privileged groups and beer with manual workers. The study also reveals persistent gender inequalities: 88% of women prepare their own breakfast, compared to only 52% of men who have this meal prepared by a woman in the family. Male participation in main meals is only 18% at lunch and 19% at dinner, rising slightly to 23-28% in households with children.
