Pets rescued by GNR from abuse situation

Diário de Coimbra11 September 2026 at 14:10

The Republican National Guard rescued thirteen pets in abuse situations in the municipality of Ílhavo, district of Aveiro. Among the animals were four dogs and nine cats that were in a state of severe neglect.

The operation was carried out by the Environmental Protection Unit of the GNR, which identified the deplorable conditions in which the animals lived. The authorities proceeded with the rescue of the animals to ensure their well-being and safety.

The owner of the animals was made a suspect in the context of this process. Being made a suspect means that the suspect will be subject to criminal proceedings for the crime of animal abuse.

This case occurred during the Christmas season, a period when the GNR usually reinforces alerts for situations of abandonment and animal abuse. The authorities frequently alert the public to responsible adoption and the importance of reporting cases of neglect.
