UGT Portugal will promote the 2nd conference of the WorkVoice Summit 2026 cycle on September 14, in Lisbon, under the theme "The Public Media Service at the Center of Democracy." The event will take place between 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM at UGT headquarters, in a hybrid format, and is aimed at union leaders and members, media workers, and all citizens interested in the challenges of social communication, the world of work, and democracy.
The organization advocates that there is no solid democracy without informed citizens and that information of public interest needs to gain more space, quality, and independence. In a time when digital networks have altered the relationship between citizens, journalists, and institutions and when disinformation has gained unprecedented influence capacity, UGT considers that discussing the future of public media service is no longer a matter reserved for sector professionals, becoming a discussion about democracy, freedom, and the right of every citizen to know facts and confront different perspectives.
The conference also aims to bring into dialogue two universes essential to democracy: the world of work and the world of information. The transformations that the media are undergoing have consequences for thousands of workers and raise questions about employment, labor rights, and the sustainability of organizations. At the same time, workers need a media space capable of ensuring visibility and access to rigorous information about major economic and social transformations.
UGT emphasizes that the public media service plays a role that cannot be reduced to audiences or market logic, and should ensure pluralism, promote rigorous information, and give voice to the diversity of society. Editorial independence, journalism credibility, working conditions of professionals, and the impact of new technologies are questions that the organization considers inseparable from the future of democracy.
