Global consumption in Portugal grew 6% in the number of operations and 3% in value during July and August 2026, compared to the same period in 2025, according to SIBS Analytics data. The average value per transaction stood at 38 euros, and one in six operations carried out on the Multibanco network was made with foreign cards.
By sector, Leisure led the growth with a 20% increase in the number of transactions and 7% in value, followed by Restaurants, which recorded increases of 10% in operations and 8% in value.
Consumption by foreign tourists rose 5% in the number of transactions and 1% in value, with an average of 39 euros per operation. The five most dynamic external markets were led by France (19%), the United Kingdom (14%), Spain (12%), Germany (7%), and the United States (7%).
As for Portuguese tourists, there was a growth of 6% in operations and 3% in value, with an average value per transaction of 37 euros. Spain consolidated itself as the preferred destination with 13% of the weight of transactions, followed by the Faro District and Lisbon, both with 12%, although Faro recorded 5% less than the previous year.
