Fires: Fire in Mértola mobilizes 115 operatives and eight aerial means

A fire broke out today at Cerro do Entrudo, in the municipality of Mértola, district of Beja, almost on the border with the Algarve. The alert was given at 11:50 through the GNR surveillance towers. The fire is consuming an area of scrubland and pasture and is evolving with intensity.

The firefighting effort mobilizes 115 operatives from various fire brigades of Baixo Alentejo and the Algarve, supported by 36 ground vehicles and eight aerial means, including helicopters and planes. The sub-regional second commander of Emergency and Civil Protection of Baixo Alentejo, José Horta, stated that there are no homes in danger, animals on the fire line or knowledge of victims.

According to José Horta, one of the problems in the operations theatre is difficult access, with moderate and steep slopes, which complicate the passage of firefighters.

Three people rescued in Viana after vessel drifts at sea

Three people, two of Spanish nationality and one Swedish, aged between 25 and 40, were rescued on Thursday night after the high-speed vessel they were on drifted about 60 nautical miles west of Viana do Castelo. The occupants were initially picked up by a merchant ship that also towed the vessel, and were then transferred to maritime authorities two nautical miles from the outer breakwater of Viana do Castelo. The forces mobilized included the Lifeboat Station, Maritime Police, Port Captaincy, Judicial Police and GNR. The three citizens "were physically well" and were identified, while the Spanish-flagged vessel was seized as a precautionary measure.
