"In one euro of diesel, 60 cents are taxes": retailers accuse the Government of "lying to the Portuguese" and demand a reduction in the tax burden

CNN Portugal11 September 2026 at 14:04

The National Association of Fuel Retailers (ANAREC) accused the Portuguese Government of "lying to the Portuguese" regarding the composition of fuel prices. According to the association, in every euro of diesel, 60 cents correspond to taxes, a proportion that has been increasing.

ANAREC also warned about the loss of competitiveness of Portuguese companies in the European context due to the high tax burden on fuels. The association argues that reducing taxation would be a way to support the national economy.

Fuel retailers are demanding a significant reduction in the tax burden on fuels, arguing that such a measure would benefit both consumers and domestic companies that depend on these products for their activities.

This position from ANAREC comes in a context of debate about the cost of fuels in Portugal and the weight of taxes in the final price paid by consumers.
