New school year starts with teacher shortage

RTP Notícias11 September 2026 at 13:40

The new school year has begun in Portugal with a significant shortage of teachers in public schools. This situation affects various subjects and education levels, creating logistical challenges for schools that need to find solutions to ensure classes run smoothly.

For the first time, students up to the 9th grade are prohibited from using smartphones during the school period. This measure aims to reduce distractions in the classroom and promote a more favorable environment for concentration and learning.

The combination of these two factors marks the beginning of a particularly challenging school year for the Portuguese educational community, both in terms of human resource management and the implementation of new disciplinary rules.
