The National Republican Guard (GNR) launched this Friday, September 11, the "Safe School" campaign for the 2026/2027 school year, a national awareness operation covering more than 4,400 educational establishments and approximately 670,000 students throughout the mainland territory. The initiative aims to reinforce the Guard's presence during the return to classes, promoting self-protection, general safety, inclusion and the prevention of deviant behaviors, integrated into the GNR's Safe School Program.
During the last school year, the GNR recorded 2,631 crimes in school settings, with 790,073 users among students, teachers, education assistants and parents reached through 17,276 awareness actions. The most prevalent crimes were simple voluntary physical assault (950 cases), threat and coercion (388), opportunistic theft of unguarded objects (137) and defamation, slander and insult (118). More serious cases were also recorded, although less frequent, such as crimes against sexual freedom and self-determination (61), possession or trafficking of prohibited weapons (45), drug trafficking (44) and sexual abuse of minors (20).
Beyond criminal offenses, the GNR counted 748 non-criminal occurrences, including disturbances of school activities (374), school dropout (230) and addictive behaviors (84). The Criminal Prevention and Community Policing Sections, comprising over 400 military personnel, maintain an active presence in schools through awareness actions, community patrol and monitoring of at-risk children and youth, in coordination with competent authorities.
The GNR also shared safety advice for the school community, including recommendations to students on road safety, bullying and cyberbullying prevention, online safety and dating violence, as well as guidance for parents on monitoring their children's school and digital activities.
