Trump promises '$5,000 dividend' to Americans if Republicans win elections

Nossa Gente11 September 2026 at 12:25

Donald Trump announced during the Republican National Convention in Dallas, Texas, a proposal that is already causing strong repercussions in the United States: a payment of $5,000 to each American adult, if the Republican Party maintains control of the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections scheduled for November. Dubbed the "Trump Dividend," the promise was presented as a kind of participation of Americans in the economic results of his administration.

The president did not detail how the program would be funded nor how the payments would be operationalized. According to estimates from the American press, the total cost could exceed $1.2 trillion. Vice President J.D. Vance subsequently signaled that higher-income individuals could be excluded from the initiative and mentioned trade tariff revenues as a possible funding source.

The proposal quickly entered the center of American political debate. Critics state that a distribution of this magnitude could increase the public deficit and further pressure inflation and interest rates. Experts also point out that the execution of a program of this magnitude would depend on Congressional authorization.

Although the promise has been questioned for possible attempts at electoral influence, legal experts consider that the proposal, in itself, does not necessarily equate to individual vote buying, since the payment would be conditioned on the overall Republican victory, not on each individual's vote. The proposal will need to overcome political, fiscal, and legislative obstacles before any implementation.
