A project located in a rural area of Portugal, within the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, is looking for volunteers willing to change their routine in exchange for contact with rescued animals. The proposal includes free accommodation, at no cost to the participants.

The Portuguese sanctuary houses 86 animals of different species that were rescued. The volunteers are responsible for the daily care of these animals, which includes feeding, enclosure hygiene and basic veterinary care.

In return, volunteers only need to work 24 hours per week. In addition to free accommodation, they also receive vegetarian meals and have free time to explore the region and practice outdoor activities in Serra da Estrela.

The proposal has attracted the attention of international travelers and volunteers, who are looking for an experience with fewer working hours and more time to enjoy nature and the company of rescued animals.

Gulf countries must meet with Iran over navigation agreement

The foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries will meet with their Iranian counterpart in Oman to seek an agreement on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran blocked in response to the war initiated by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic. Iran and Oman are finalizing an interim pact establishing a corridor for commercial ships, intending for the GCC to join the agreement to pressure Washington to lift the blockade on Iranian ports. The Gulf countries want a temporary pact that allows the circulation of ships while negotiating the future status of the strait, through which a fifth of world oil production passed, hoping the initiative will reduce tensions between the US and Iran and contribute to the reopening of Hormuz, in a context where Houthi rebels have consolidated presence in the Bab el-Mandeb strait area, causing the price of oil to exceed 107 dollars per barrel.

Historical demography, humanity's long march | By Jorge Queiroz

This opinion article by Jorge Queiroz explores the demographic evolution of Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula over the centuries. The text analyzes from the first Neolithic settlements, through the Roman and Muslim periods, to the formation of the Kingdom of Portugal, highlighting milestones such as the first general census of 1527 (1.1 million inhabitants), the doubling of the population in the 19th century (from 3 to 6 million) and the doubling again during the 20th century (from 5.4 to 10.6 million). The author alerts to Portugal's current demographic challenges, including aging, low birth rates (only 1.4 children per woman, when the replacement rate is 2.1) and the reversal of migratory flows, transforming Portugal from a country of emigrants to a receiver of foreign workers, who represent approximately 14% of the total population.
