The number of new residence permits in the European Union increased by 10.1% in 2025, corresponding to 355,350 more permits compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 3.9 million, according to Eurostat data published today.
Brazilian citizens occupy fourth place among the main groups of nationals who obtained residence permits in the EU, with 170,400 new permits issued.
According to the EU statistical office, employment was the main reason for issuing new residence permits in the EU, representing about one third of the total first permits issued in 2025, corresponding to 1.3 million or 33.6% of the total.
Family reasons were the second most frequent cause for granting residence permits in the European Union during the same period.
