Ruben Alves: My weapon is my stories

Jornal de Negócios11 September 2026 at 11:00

Franco-Portuguese director Ruben Alves launched this week his new film, "Santo António - o Casamenteiro de Lisboa," in Portuguese cinemas. Alves gained international recognition with the success of "A Gaiola Dourada," which established him as a reference director in comedy.

The film directly addresses the gentrification of the Portuguese capital, showing how Lisbon is transforming and losing its traditional identity. The work presents a critical view of the changes the city has faced in recent years.

"Santo António - o Casamenteiro de Lisboa" is described as a comedy sprinkled with melancholy. The mix of humor with sadder moments allows the director to explore deep themes in a way that is accessible to the audience.

The film also warns of the need to preserve local traditions. Through the story, Ruben Alves seeks to raise awareness among viewers about the importance of not letting the customs and culture that define the identity of Lisbon and its inhabitants disappear.
