Rato. Police Officers Accused of Torture Tried Behind Closed Doors

SAPO Notícias11 September 2026 at 10:03

Two police officers are being tried behind closed doors for alleged crimes of torture, in a case relating to events that occurred between 2024 and 2025. The officers are suspected of having assaulted people who were detained at the Rato police station, in Lisbon.

The trial is taking place without public access, a measure that was determined by the court. The judge responsible for the case has already considered there to be a "serious probability" that the two police officers will be convicted for the assaults allegedly committed against the detainees.

This case arises in a context of various investigations and proceedings related to alleged ill-treatment practiced by security forces at Portuguese police stations, an issue that has generated public debate about conditions in detention and the need for oversight of police forces.
