The trial of two police officers from the Rato police station, aged 22 and 26, accused of crimes of torture and rape, begins this Friday. The officers are suspected of having committed violent assaults against people who were detained at the station.
The victims were mainly drug addicts, suspects of minor crimes, foreigners in irregular situations or homeless people. The police filmed the abuses, which served as evidence for the investigation.
This case revealed abusive practices by officers from the Rato police station, a precinct located in a central area of Lisbon. The trial promises to bring to light details about how detainees were treated.
