Syria detains nine former military pilots for "serious war crimes against the people" during Assad regime

The new Syrian authorities detained nine former Syrian military pilots for war crimes allegedly committed during the Bashar al-Assad regime. The information was first reported by the Kurdish media Rudaw and confirmed by the Ministry of Defense of the Syrian transitional government.

The pilots were detained for involvement in "serious war crimes against the Syrian people," according to the official statement from the Ministry of Defense. The authorities did not specify which specific air operations are under investigation.

Since the fall of the Al Assad regime on December 8, 2024, the new Syrian authorities have launched operations to locate and detain former military personnel, agents and militiamen accused of assassinations, torture and massacres during decades of authoritarian rule.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that those detained will be tried according to law, in a process that promises to be one of the first major trials for crimes of the former regime.
