During the 2022 general election campaign, the expansion of Bolsa Família emerged as a consensus proposal across all poles of the contest, on the heels of the harsh scars left by the pandemic. During the third term of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the program's budget was significantly expanded, rising from 0.87% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2022 to 1.52% of GDP in 2023, his first year in government.
According to public finance specialist Fabio Giambiagi, after several audits conducted to identify irregularities in the program, spending began to shrink gradually, without inflation adjustments. Currently, the Bolsa Família budget represents 1.14% of GDP, representing a reduction compared to 2023 levels.
