American Airlines Flight 77 was hijacked by Al-Qaeda terrorists during the September 11, 2001 attacks. The hijackers redirected the plane to Washington D.C.
The plane crashed into the Pentagon, the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, causing great destruction to the building. The attack occurred as part of a coordinated series of terrorist acts.
All 53 people on board Flight 77 perished in the impact. In addition to the passengers and six crew members, 125 military personnel and civilians who were inside the Pentagon also died in the attack.
