Classes begin with teacher shortage and smartphone ban up to 9th grade

Schools begin today to welcome students for another academic year. This return to classes brings new rules and challenges for the Portuguese education system.

One of the main new features is the ban on smartphones up to 9th grade. This measure applies to all students in basic education and represents a significant change in daily school life.

The other major problem marking this start of the academic year is the already announced shortage of teachers. This scarcity of teachers especially affects the Lisbon area, where there are greater difficulties in ensuring teachers for all classes.

Thus, schools face a double challenge: implementing the new ban on mobile phones while trying to address the shortage of teachers, particularly in the Lisbon region.
